Tarifa marks the most southern point of the Iberian Peninsula and therefore the "endpoint" of the European mainland. Africa is only 14 kilometres away and some visitors get the impression they are merely standing at the shore of a big lake when they are looking at the other continent. Yet, the glistening water in between Tarifa and Africa belongs partly to the Mediterranean Sea and partly to the Atlantic Ocean . The pretty Old Town with its narrow and winding lanes invites the visitor for strolling around. The town centre is embedded within the thick walls of a fortress and is regarded as one of the most beautiful town centres at the Costa de la Luz.
There's a steady wind blowing. No wonder! Tarifa faces the sea at both ends, without natural protection. The strait of Gibraltar functions like a valve, through which the wind is pressed constantly. Mass tourism is not a pronounced feature here, due to the wind. However, the same wind entices many wind surfers from all over the world to Tarifa which is also called the wind surfing capital of Europe . The young, tanned and sporty people found here during the summer months contribute to the unique image of the town. Sports and nightlife are the main features of Tarifa. After surfing, people meet in one of the many tapas bars, before clubbing at night time.
The visitors who don't come here for surfing also have plenty of things to see and do. Among other things, they can enjoy the many cafés, tapas bars, restaurants or boutiques in town. The shops offer a variety of colourful fashion. Daytrips to Africa or whale-watching (www.firmm.org) are also possible. These are fantastic trips that no one is likely to ever forget. Tarifas beaches also mirror the natural beauty of the town. Approaching Tarifa from the North, visitors will be able to admire the 10km golden beach with its turquoise waters.
The beach has remained mainly unspoiled by buildings and it ends in a huge shifting sand dune. There are no blocks of hotels to be found along the beach which is an unusual and very pleasant experience in the area.
The western side of the dune is the starting point for a further 9km of beaches. With their bays and rock formations, the beaches invite the visitor for long strolls and nude sun bathing. Overcrowded beaches is a foreign word in this area. A small, popular beach can be found within the town itself. This is normally a bit more crowded than the rest, due to the lighter winds. Tarifa offers a large variety of sports and free time activities such as kite-surfing, horse riding, mountain biking, hiking, diving or climbing to name only a few. So, if you want to spend an active time, Tarifa is THE place to be!
